Unexpected Health Emergencies

Unexpected Medical Emergencies can occur without warning and may involve sudden cardiac arrest, opioid poisoning, or other serious condition requiring medical attention.  School staff play an essential role in recognizing emergencies quickly and responding with appropriate, trained actions while professional medical help is on the way.

This page provides:

  • Administrative Procedures (APs) for responding to unexpected medical emergencies
  • Guidance on the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)
  • Guidance on the administration of naloxone in suspected opioid poisonings
  •  Links to training and resources

Automatic External Defibrillators

This page provides site based JOHS committees with the information they need to use, maintain and troubleshoot their AED.  Each school site is equipped with the ZOLL AED 3 (Fully Automatic External Defibrillator).
