First Aid Program for Employees

WorkSafeBC regulations (effective November 1, 2024) require all employers to provide adequate first aid coverage, equipment, and trained attendants. This includes annual assessments, proper signage, CSA-compliant first aid kits and written procedures.

Responsibilities

District Administration

  • Complete an annual first aid assessment per WorkSafeBC Schedule 3-A.
  • Provide CSA-compliant first aid kits at all sites.
  • Fund training for designated attendants:
    • Basic First Aid for sites with fewer than 51 employees.
    • Intermediate First Aid for sites with 51 or more employees.
  • Maintain a registry of certified attendants.

Principals & Site Administrators

  • Appoint a designated first aid attendant and backup.
  • Ensure coverage when the designated attendant is absent.
  • Post written first aid procedures and signage.
  • Conduct annual drills to test procedures.
  • The district supplies replacement supplies for Work Safe BC compliant first aid kits at the first aid station

Occupational First Aid Attendants

  • Provide care within the scope of certification.
  • Respond promptly to all areas.
  • Maintain confidential treatment records for 3 years.
  • Keep kits stocked and certificates posted.
  • Refer injuries beyond their scope to medical professionals.

Student Injuries

First aid responsibilities apply to employees only. Student injuries follow separate district protocols and do not use WorkSafeBC forms.

Receiving First Aid

  • Summon help by contacting the school office; the office will notify the attendant.
  • First aid stations are located near the main office and marked with a visible “First Aid” sign.
  • Written procedures for requesting first aid are posted at each site.

Required First Aid Supplies

WorkSafeBC now requires kits aligned with CSA Z1220 standards plus BC-specific PPE additions. Here’s what’s needed for low-hazard workplaces with up to 51 employees:

Basic First Aid Kit (CSA Type 2)

Adhesive bandages (assorted sizes)Antiseptic cleansing towelettesScissors and tweezers
Sterile gauze pads (various sizes)Antibiotic ointment packetsFirst aid manual
 Abdominal pads (5 × 9 in.)Disposable nitrile glovesBlanket (thermal or regular)
Adhesive tape rolls
CPR face shield or maskEye wash (saline)
Compress/pressure dressings with ties
Medical masksCold packs
Triangular bandages with safety pins
Safety eyewear or face shieldBiohazard waste disposal bags
Conforming stretch bandages - 2 in×2yd and 3in×2yd
Windlass tourniquet

Tip: Kits must be inspected regularly for expired or damaged items.

Intermediate Kit (CSA Type 3) – For 51+ Employees

Includes all Basic Kit items plus:

Additional quantities of bandages and dressingsOxygen therapy kit (if remote or less accessible)
Splints for limb immobilizationExtra PPE (masks, gloves, eye protection)
 


First Aid Equipment Deficiencies

First Aid Attendant can send an email to OHS@sd64.org  and specify the exact items and quantity when replacements are needed.

Additional Requirements

  • Dressing station: Required for sites with 20+ workers.
  • First aid room: Required for sites with 100+ workers.
  • Annual drills: Must test written procedures
