The Board

VISTA | Trustees and district staff will present Walking in Both Worlds, which highlights the connection between governance and classroom practices, at the Vancouver Island School Trustees’ Association meeting in Cowichan on March 7.

Meeting Broadcasts | Updated livestream engagement metrics will be provided and reviewed at the April 22 Committee of the Whole meeting. 

District Updates

GISS Student Council | Members of the Gulf Islands Secondary School Student Council shared a presentation outlining their recent and ongoing work. This year’s projects include creating a music exchange program, improving water taxi communication, “choose your own assignment” learning opportunities, and advocating for an additional evacuation chair. The Council will interview students to help determine future initiatives. 

IEC Update | The District and IEC continue collaborating on the renewal of the Enhancement Agreement, supported by Education Consultant Denise Augustine. The IEC expressed strong support for the proposed BAA course Two‑Eyed Seeing Anatomy & Physiology 12, committing to advocate for its inclusion in the provincial graduation program. Meeting updates highlighted cultural programming for 177 Indigenous learners, including Culture Clubs, Language Lunches, and SENĆOŦEN and Hul’q’umi’num language integration, as well as planning for weaving and drum‑making workshops and preparations for Indigenous Peoples Day on June 17. The Council approved moving forward with a call for Coast Salish artwork that will be used for official gifts.

Projected Enrolment | 2026-2027 projected enrolment numbers estimate a total of 1,420 students district wide. This early projection shows a slight decline compared to September 2025 enrolment.

Finances and Budget

Monthly Financial Report and Budget Update | January’s expenditure report shows spending is slightly under budget by 0.2%. The 2025/2026 Amended Annual Budget Bylaw of $31,203,877 received three readings and was approved.

Policy Committee

Policy Approved | New Policy 4.60 Unexpected Health Emergencies was adopted and will be posted in the Policies & Administrative Practices section of the district website.

Notice of Circulation | Draft Bylaw #1 Election Procedures received first reading and will be posted on the district website and circulated for feedback. The Board will consider 2nd and 3rd reading and adoption of the amended Bylaw at the April 8, 2026 meeting of the Board in public.

Draft Policy | Draft policy 1.60 Role, Responsibilities, and Expectations of the Superintendent of Schools will be brought to the April Committee of the Whole meeting for discussion.
