The primary purpose of the district student water taxi is to support catchment area attendance. Courtesy ridership privileges may be extended beyond this primary purpose to allow students to access the water taxi on a student social pass.

Processes

1.  A student social pass may only be granted:
1.1.
To Gulf Islands School District 64 students who reside on Pender, Saturna, Mayne or Galiano Islands and hold a valid standard or courtesy water taxi pass, so that they may travel to another Gulf Island for a social purpose.
1.2.
If there is anticipated space on the requested student water taxi route(s).
2.A Student Social Pass Request Form must be completed and signed by both the parent/guardian of the student traveling and by an adult living in the receiving home, who will be responsible for the student while in their care.
2.1.
The signed permission form must be received by both the transportation department (transportation@sd64.org) and the administrative assistant of the school that the traveling student attends at least 2 school days prior to the requested travel date.
3.The transportation department may issue a temporary student social pass only when the criteria outlined in sections 1 and 2 of this Practice have been met and in accordance with District Administrative Practice AP T5 Student Transportation.
4.Transportation for students with an approved social pass is not guaranteed on the requested date(s) of travel, despite prior approval. Access to the water taxi is dependent on actual available space on the water taxi on any given day of travel. Transportation is offered to courtesy riders in order of priority outlined in the Board’s Student Transportation Policy only once the needs of all standard riders have been met.
5.Student social passes will be provided free of charge.
