Unofficial Summary of the Public Board Meeting, held October 8, 2025

The Board of Education                                                                  

VISTA | Trustees attended the VISTA fall gathering in Campbell River on October 3 – 4. The event featured presentations on anti-ablism and disability justice, land-based learning, and inclusive education.

Ministry of Education | Chair Katrensky participated in a call with Minister Beare. Key topics included: legislative changes regarding childcare on school property, $5.4 million Ministry investment to develop more inclusive and representative teacher training programs, introduction of a new centralized hub under the Ministry of Citizen Services.

District Updates

Indigenous Education Council (IEC) | The Board approved the IECs request for full involvement in the hiring of the Superintendent and Indigenous Education Principal. The next IEC meeting will be held Nov. 3.

Strategic Plan Review The annual review of the Gulf Island School District strategic direction was presented. Progress is evaluated using the SD64 Work Plan Cycle which operationalizes the 2024-2028 Strategic Direction.

Enrolment and Staffing | As of September 30, district enrolment is 44 FTE above what was projected by schools in the spring. The district has successfully filled GITA and CUPE positions for the school year. 

Anti Racism Survey | The district continues its work to dismantle racism and exclusionary practices. Highlights were shared, including results from the annual anti-racism survey completed by district staff.

Finances and Budget

Monthly Financial Report | September’s expenditure report shows spending is 0.69% below projected budget levels.

Transportation | All students who registered for bus transportation have been assigned seats across the district’s nine bus routes. Early registration played a key role in ensuring full accommodation 

Program Review | Phase 3 of the Educational Program Review will begin, focusing on the Gulf Island School of Performing Arts. A dedicated email engagement@sd64.org was created for public feedback.

64GO PAC | The Board approved the establishment of a Parent Advisory Council (PAC) at 64GO under section 8 of the School Act.

Policy Committee

Amended Policies Approved | The Board approved amendments to the following policies:

            Policy 1.21 Role of Chairperson and Vice Chairperson

            Policy 1.22 Trustee Remuneration 

Notice of Motion | The following draft polices will be circulated for feedback. Feedback and adoption and adoption will be considered at the November 19 meeting of the Board in public:

            5.65 Naming of Facilities (new policy)

            2.30 Anti-Racism (amended to remove “in May” from clause 4.4)
