Spotlight64 | SSE Takes Environmental Action
Students from Kindergarten through Grade 7 at Salt Spring Elementary School recently came together in a powerful demonstration of environmental stewardship, showing that even small actions can make a meaningful difference in our community.
All classes participated in a community clean-up initiative, taking ownership of nearby areas that were within walking distance of the school. Equipped with gloves, garbage bags, and a strong sense of purpose, students worked together to remove waste and restore the natural beauty of their surroundings.
A highlight of the day was the partnership between “big buddies” and “little buddies.” Older students supported and guided younger peers, modelling responsibility, teamwork, and care for the environment. This collaboration not only strengthened relationships across grade levels but also fostered a shared commitment to looking after the world we all depend on.
Throughout the clean-up, students collected many bags of garbage, including items such as discarded tires, styrofoam, and plastic. Seeing the amount and types of waste firsthand provided a powerful, real-world learning experience. Students were able to reflect on the impact of human actions on the environment and consider how they can make more sustainable choices in their daily lives.
This initiative connected directly to the core competencies. Students demonstrated:
- Social responsibility by contributing to the well-being of their community
- Collaboration and communication through working together across grades
- Critical and reflective thinking as they considered environmental challenges and solutions
- Personal awareness and responsibility by taking pride in their contributions and actions
By stepping outside the classroom and into the community, students gained valuable hands-on learning experiences that will stay with them for years to come. This project not only made the local environment cleaner but also helped grow a generation of thoughtful, responsible citizens committed to making a positive difference.
Thank you Principal Amy Dearden for submitting this Spotlight story and showcasing SSE students making a difference in their community.
