Spotlight64 | Career Education and Transition Days: Celebrating Connection Across the District
Gulf Islands School District recently came together across land and sea for two memorable days of career exploration and Grade 7 transition activities. Designed to bridge the geography of our island district, these events gave students the chance to connect with peers from other schools, explore future possibilities, and begin looking ahead to the next stage of their learning journey.
On Tuesday, April 28, students from Fulford, Fernwood, and Salt Spring Elementary Schools travelled to Gulf Islands Secondary School. Two days later, on Thursday, April 30, students from Galiano, Mayne, and Saturna Island Schools gathered at Pender Islands School. For many, it was the first opportunity to meet future classmates in person, and the excitement was evident from the moment the day began.
Students explored their interests through the Find Your Fit Career Education event, stepped inside the Camosun Trades Truck for hands-on learning, and took part in Grade 7 orientation activities that helped make the transition to Grade 8 feel more familiar and welcoming. They asked thoughtful questions, tried new experiences, and began building the confidence and connections that will carry forward into their new school communities.
The positive impact of these days was felt beyond the students. The organizer of Find Your Fit shared their appreciation for the opportunity to work with Gulf Islands students, noting both the beauty of our district and the respect, curiosity, and enthusiasm students brought to every interaction. Neil Kerrigan and the Camosun Trades team echoed that appreciation, describing the events as some of the most rewarding experiences they had enjoyed this year.
These memorable days were made possible through a true district-wide effort. From coordinating buses and water taxis to planning around ferry schedules, staff across the district worked together to create welcoming and meaningful experiences for students. The result was more than a successful event. It was a celebration of connection, collaboration, and the care that helps define SD64.
Thank you to Lyall Ruehlen, District Principal, for his part in making these events possible and celebrating learning that brings our strategic goals to life.
