Unofficial Summary of the Public Board Meeting, held January 14, 2026

The Board 

BCSTA Academy | Trustees and District staff attended the BCSTA Academy Nov. 27 – 29, in Vancouver

Committees | Changes to Standing Committee appointments were reviewed. Trustee Boulter has assumed the position of Chair of the Finance, Audit & Facilities (FAF) Committee and joined the Policy Committee. Trustees Luporini and Macdonald have joined the FAF Committee.

District Updates 

BAA Course The Board approved the Board/Authority Authorized Course Improv Theatre 11.

Outer Island Programs | Changes will be made to AP A5 Student Registration and Placement and AP T5 Student Transportation to allow for students from Mayne and Galiano Islands, who are cross-boundary enrolled at Pender Islands School, to access water taxi transportation, space permitting as courtesy riders. 

New Administrative Practices | Newly published APs G1 Organizational Structure, G2 Board Annual Workplan and L8 Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards are available in the Policy & AP Library

Program Review, Phase 3 | GISS will undertake a comprehensive review of its programming, examining current offerings, evaluating student participation, and engaging staff and students in discussion.

GISS Student Council | Eight members of the Gulf Islands Secondary School Student Council attended the meeting. GISS council co-chairs expressed enthusiasm to participate in future meetings.

Finances and Budget

Monthly Financial Report and Budget Update | December’s expenditure report shows spending is over budget by 0.5%. Secretary Treasurer Guy presented the Draft Annual Amended Budget Discussion available in the public agenda package. The draft 2025/2026 Amended Budget was shared. The Amended Budget Bylaw will be considered for adoption at the February 11 meeting of the board in public.

Policy Committee 

Policies & Procedures Repealed | The following polices & procedures were repealed:

  • Procedure 3050 Emergency Management and Response (and forms 3050-1, 3050-2)
  • Procedure 3051 Fire Management and Response
  • Procedure 3052 Earthquake Management and Response
  • Policy and Procedure 3056 Unwelcome Visitors/Intruders
  • Policy and Procedure 3550 First Aid and Accident Reports
  • Policy and Procedure 4260 Student Illness and Injury

Notice of Motion | Draft policy 4.60 Unexpected Health Emergencies will be posted on the district website, circulated for feedback, and will be considered for adoption at the February 11, 2026, meeting of the board in public.
