District Updates

GISS Student Council | The Gulf Islands Secondary School Student Council will host an open house meeting next week to share their work and encourage participation for the coming year. The Council proposed including a student representative on the GISS Principal hiring panel and compiled a document highlighting desired leadership qualities with an emphasis on strong communication skills.

IEC Update | The Indigenous Education Council met at Gulf Islands Secondary School on May 4 and approved the 2026-2027 Indigenous Education Targeted Funding budget. Members reviewed district efforts to improve student learning, well-being, and outcomes, and noted strong graduation and completion rates for Indigenous students highlighted in the How Are We Doing report. Student voice and survey feedback continue to shape relationship‑based, culturally grounded initiatives such as Youth on the Land, Indigenous celebrations, language inclusion, wellness spaces, and Two‑Eyed Seeing approaches. IEC members visited the land at Xwaaqw’um to observe ongoing projects.

Inclusive Education | The February Inclusive Education audit confirmed that SD64 is in full compliance with all provincial directives, policies, and orders. The audit found that the district’s Inclusive Education philosophy is clearly reflected in documented processes, practices, student files, and data‑informed decision‑making. Strong alignment from district to school to individual levels through the Strategic Plan, Inclusive Education Commitments, School Plans, and CBIEPs, demonstrate consistency, collaboration, and effectiveness. Inclusive Education designations have continued to grow, increasing from 171 students in 2021 to 255 students in 2025.
