Unofficial Summary of the Public Board Meeting, held June 10, 2026

District Updates

Scholarships | A total of 81 Gulf Islands Secondary School students received 177 scholarships, bursaries and awards totaling almost $300,000.

School Fees | The approved 2026-2027 Schedule of School Fees is now available on the district website.

Finances and Budget

Monthly Financial Report | The May report indicates spending is slightly over the amended budget by 1.1% with 91% of the fiscal year completed. However, revenue and expenses related to labour settlement funding were unknown at the time the amended budget was approved and therefore not accounted for.

Facilities Planning | The Board approved the Five-Year Capital Plan – Major Submission, focused on seismic mitigation. 

Elections

Information Series | District staff will host information sessions on June 24 and September 2 at 6:30 p.m. via Microsoft Teams, to provide information on the role of trustee, election processes, and required paperwork. Information about the 2026 School Trustee Election will be posted on the district website. 

Delegation

Youth in Action | Members of the GISS Earth Club presented a proposal to implement recycling and composting efforts at the school and reported on the work they have undertaken.

Policy Committee

Repealed Policies | The following policies were repealed in favour of Administrative Practices:

                        Policy 4.20 Student Physical Restraint and Seclusion

                        Policy 4.30 Severe Allergic Reactions

                        Policy 4.40 Provisions of Menstrual Products

                        Policy 4.50 Video Surveillance

                        Policy 4.60 Unexpected Health Emergencies 

                        Policy 3.50 Curricular, Co-Curricular, and Extra Curricular Activities. 

Approved Policy | Policy 1.60 Role and Responsibilities of the Superintendent of School was approved and will be available on the district website. 

Notice of Motion | Draft amendments to the following policies will be posted on the district website, circulated for feedback, and will be considered for adoption at the September 16, 2026, meeting:

                        Policy 2.10 Inclusive and Respectful Environments, 

                        Policy 2.20 Sexual Identity, Gender Diversity and Gender Expression

                        Policy 2.70 Use of Board Property for Child Care
