Spotlight64 | Deeper Learning at Gulf Islands Secondary School

Gulf Islands Secondary School

The Board of Education recently visited Gulf Islands Secondary School (GISS), an environment that radiates a unique and inspiring spirit. As a central hub for learners across the islands, GISS is alive with energy, curiosity, and a strong sense of connection. And witnessing students who are engaged in learning and discovering their evolving identities is one of the greatest privileges of public education.academics_medialab_massey_051.627b067064.jpg

Principal Ryan Massey and Vice-Principal Stacey Mitchell welcomed trustees with a look into this year’s school focus—Deepening Learning. This simple phrase carries a powerful intention. At GISS, learning is anchored at the intersection of mastery, identity, and creativity, helping students develop expertise, deepen their self-understanding, and produce meaningful, original work. By conducting student interviews and gathering reflections, staff are collecting ‘street data’—direct insights from learners about what makes them feel engaged, confident, and connected.

A highlight of the visit was a tour led by students from the Leadership class: DJ, Hannah, Dylan, Bella, and Tida. Their pride in GISS was evident as they guided trustees through various classrooms and workshops. In the arts wing, a guest musician collaborated with students in a relaxed and creative session. The applied skills wing buzzed with activity, as projects in wood, metal, and leather came to life. In each classroom, students shared their learning, from courthouse visits in Law 12 to Grade 8s navigating their first months of high school.

Light-filled hallways, a welcoming cafeteria hub, and a central courtyard create an atmosphere of openness, creativity, and connection. Even the student newspaper, “The Sting,” fresh from the press, reflects this spirit through thoughtful writing, creative photography, humour, and student engagement.

Above all, what resonated most during the visit was the atmosphere. It is a school where students are known, where a sense of belonging is nurtured, and where learning is both meaningful and vibrant. GISS is a place where young people are encouraged to grow into themselves—with support, curiosity, and the freedom to dream.

The Board of Education extends sincere appreciation to the GISS community for their warm welcome. The school continues to shine as a dynamic centre of learning within the Gulf Islands.
