Our School

Fernwood Elementary School is home to approximately 200 students and their families in the north end of Salt Spring Island. Our expansive school grounds feature an outdoor classroom, garden, greenhouse, and new playgrounds, providing students with ample opportunities for outdoor learning and play. Our programs, spanning grades K-7, encourage students to deeply explore natural spaces on local farms, beaches, and parks in multi-age group settings. Guided by the principles of respect, responsibility, and reaching out to others, Fernwood students foster a caring community. Our halls resonate with laughter, singing, beautiful artwork, and the occasional dance party!

Office Hours:

Monday to Thursday & Instructional Fridays | 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

First Week of School:

Monday – Thursday, August 31 to September 3 School Office Open

Tuesday, September 8 First Day of School (half day – dismissed at noon)

Buses will pick up students from Fernwood and depart shortly after 12:00 noon dropping off students on their regular route.

Daily Schedule:

Morning Bell | 8:20 a.m.
Morning Recess | 10:30 – 10:48 a.m.
Lunch Recess | 12:15 – 1:00 p.m.
Dismissal Bell | 3:05 p.m.
