Aboriginal Cultural Programs
Teachers and schools can apply for funds for cultural programs. These can be classroom visits or performances/events for the whole school.
We have several people who have provided programs in the past and who can be requested. Availability depends on their schedule:
Johnny Aitken (Mayne Is.)
A carver who has worked on numerous projects.
Chris Arnett (Salt Spring)
A local historian who is conversant in local First Nations history. Shares artifacts and stories.
Richard Charlie (Penlakut Is.)
A carver who worked with GISS students on carving projects.
Florence James (Chemainus)
A Hul'qui'mi'num elder, Florence tells of her family history on Kuper & Galiano Is. Shares photos and stories.
Jim Spencer (Salt Spring)
Jim has an interest in healing and shares his medicine bag and crystals as well as stories.
John Williams & Earl Claxton (Saanich)
These two present native use of plant workshops, either in the field or in classrooms. They are very knowledgeable.
